Wheel Mandrels

Wheel mandrels are precision machined tools used to hold a wheel in place when using a drill or dremel tool as shown in the bottom picture.  This is necessary for several of the wheel modifications you will be performing.

The standard wheel mandrel (top picture) provides a basic positioning of the wheel in a drill.  It can then be sanded and polished while spinning.

The benefits of the ProWheel Mandrel (2nd picture) are:

bullet Accurately machined shaft allows for precision use in any drill chuck or dremel type tool.

bullet Step-down on shaft allows BSA wheels to be mounted with the spokes facing the drill chuck which simplifies work on the inside edge of the wheel tread.

bullet The Pro Wheel Mandrel, as opposed to the standard wheel mandrel which requires a screwdriver, has a knurled thumb screw for greater ease of use in mounting a wheel.

bullet The screw can be replaced should it become lost or bent.

The Pro-Hub Tool is a precision machined tool used to improve the accuracy of the wheel bore and wheel hub.

The benefits of the Pro-Hub Tool are:

bullet Ensures proper axle fit into the wheel bore by reaming undersized wheel bores.  This is a very important alignment procedure as it allows the car to sit evenly on all 4 wheels with equal distances from the axle to the track.  (Imagine a car that has one wheel riding high.  The car would have a slight bounce going down the track and be very unstable)

bullet Ensures accurate rotation by squaring the inner wheel hub to the wheel bore for proper mounting on a wheel mandrel.

bullet Reduces the primary friction contact point between the wheel and the car body by accurately and easily coning the inside wheel hub.

Wow! What nice, shiny, straight axles you have.  Yeah, right!  Ok, dull straight axles.  Guess again! Just put your axles in a drill, spin and you will see what we mean.

The Pro-Axle Press will improve the speed of your pinewood derby car by performing the following critical procedures on nail type axles:

bullet Axle Straightening- Ensures accurate wheel tracking by creating absolutely straight axles and improved wheel tracking equals greater speed.

bullet Axle Rounding- Ensures accurate wheel rotation by creating absolutely round axle shafts.  Improved wheel rotation equals greater speed.

bullet Head Squaring- Ensures proper wheel rotation by squaring the axle head to the axle shaft.  Improved wheel rotation equals greater speed.

bullet Precision Finishing- More consistent sanding and polishing due to straight axle shaft.

bullet Raised Wheel and Alignment Adjustments- When it is necessary to purposely bend an axle to raise a front wheel (Get "Domination By Design" and we will show you why) or make an alignment adjustment, the Pro-Axle press serves as a clamping device for holding the axle while making the bend.

See detailed Instructions on using the Pro-Axle Press.

Note: The Pro-Axle Press is designed for use on BSA and PineCar nail-type axles.  The press is not intended for use with rod-type or screw-type axles used by the Awanas or Royal Rangers.

As you look at your Pinewood Derby Wheels, the first thing you may notice is that they are black and have Made in the USA and Boy Scouts of America on them.  Good.  The second thing you may notice is that they are round.  Wrong!!!

The Pro-Shaver XT is a precision device that will "shave time" off your pinewood derby runs by:

bullet Creating a wheel which is perfectly round and true to the wheel bore.

bullet Removing the primary mold mark on the wheel surface as well as other deep scratches.

bullet Creating a smooth outer surface for more precise surface sanding.

bullet Truing the inside edge of the wheel by removing molding mark and excess material.

For greater ease of use, the Pro-Shaver XT is equipped with screw-adjustable blade depth.  Just turn the know to raise or lower the blade.

Note: The Pro-Shaver XT is intended for use on wheels made  of a hard plastic such as those included in kits offered by BSA, PineCar, Royal Rangers, S&W, and Royal Ambassadors.  It is not intended for use on wheels made of a soft plastic such as those offered by Awana and PinePro.

A Pro-Hub Tool (not included) is required for use with the Pro-Shaver XT.

See detailed Instructions on using the Pro-Shaver XT

Who Moved My Wheels?

In some pinewood derby races, extended wheel bases are allowed, and if so in your race, you had better enlist this speed tip or choose to just be competitive.

The Pro-Body Tool will improve the speed of your pinewood derby car by:

bullet Axle Slot Preparation- For kits with axle slots, the Pro-Body Tool ensures accurate axle positioning by allowing you to drill accurate axle pilot holes into the existing axle slots with a hand drill.  The pilot holes ensure that the axles are mounted square and true on the car.  Improved axle mounting accuracy equals greater alignment and greater speed!

bullet Axle Hole Drilling- For races which allow axle holes, the Pro-Body Tool serves as a guide for drilling accurate axle holes with a hand drill.  Again, improved axle mounting accuracy equals greater alignment and greater speed!

bullet Axle Hole Re-drilling- For kits with the screw and 3/8" dowel rod axle system, the Pro-Body Tool (Model 5148) allows you to accurately re-drill the axle pilot holes.

See detailed Instructions on using the Pro-Body Tool.

Polishing the Wheel Bore

To understand why one needs to even think about polishing the inside of the wheel bore, one need only a magnifying glass.  Look inside the wheel bore and you may see just about anything from scratches and pin marks to ridges and indentions.

Polishing the wheel bore will reduce friction by:

bullet Eliminating plastic debris and reducing scratches

bullet Providing an initial polish to the wheel bore

bullet Micro-Gloss- The best abrasive for the wheel bore is a white paste called Micro-Gloss.  Micro-Gloss is a water based liquid abrasive which uses a one micron aluminum oxide crystal to remove hairline scratches.  It will create a clean, scratch free environment for your axles.

bullet    Micro-Finish is the perfect finishing touch for polishing the wheel bore.  It is a non-abrasive polish used to provide the high lustre and ultra low friction  you need to dominate!
