Easily, the
most important pinewood derby speed tip to come out in the last
few years. If you want to dominate your pinewood derby
race, you simply must incorporate the Rail Rider™ technique.
It has been a part of every one of our track records and of
course, our Pinewood Derby National Championship cars!!!!!
 |
The idea behind the rail rider
method is to maintain light, consistent contact between the center
guide rail and one of the front wheels, heretofore known as the
dominant front wheel. The other wheel is generally off the track in
a 3 wheel touching format although this technique can be used in a 4
wheel on the track car as well.
|
 |
By maintaining constant, light
contact with one front wheel, one can avoid any contact between the
guide rail and the more important rear wheels caused by speed
wobbles. These are hard, quick contacts with the weight bearing
wheels which cause significant speed losses.
|
 |
The slight contact between the
guide rail and the dominant front wheel also causes friction but it
is minimal in comparison to these hard hits taken by the rear
wheels.
|
 |
We cannot completely avoid these
hard contacts and therefore must choose the least speed killing
method, Rail Rider. Regardless of one’s skepticism, one cannot
deny the impact of this method on times for the best builders in the
country in their national pinewood derby league cars. |

Rail Rider Tool. |

As you look at your Pinewood Derby
Wheels, the first thing you may notice is that they are
black and have Made in the USA and Boy Scouts of America
on them. Good. The second thing you may
notice is that they are round. Wrong!!!
The
Pro-Shaver XT-2
is a precision device that will "shave time" off
your pinewood derby runs by:
 |
Creating a wheel which is perfectly round
and true to the wheel bore.
|
 |
Removing the primary mold mark
on the wheel surface as well as other deep
scratches.
|
 |
Creating a smooth outer surface
for more precise surface sanding.
|
 |
Truing the inside edge
of the wheel by removing molding mark and excess
material.
|
For greater ease of use, the
Pro-Shaver XT-2 is equipped with screw-adjustable blade
depth. Just turn the know to raise or lower the
blade.
Note: The Pro-Shaver XT-2 is intended
for use on wheels made of a hard plastic such as
those included in kits offered by BSA, PineCar, Royal
Rangers, S&W, and Royal Ambassadors. It is not
intended
for use on wheels made of a soft plastic such as those
offered by Awana and PinePro.
A Pro-Hub Tool (not included) is required for use
with the Pro-Shaver XT-2.

Pro-Body Tool II

Pro-Body Jig
$37.95
(#44 drill bit and
3/32" hex key are included)
|
Who Moved My Wheels Part II ??
The Pro Body
Tool as described above has been one of the more popular
tools in the DerbyWorx line of specialty pinewood derby
tools.
However, DerbyWorx has taken steps to improve on this
terrific tool. Most homes don't have a drill press
so the use of the pro body tool with a hand drill is
made for that situation. The Pro Body Jig however
includes the following major improvements:
 |
Axle Slot
Preparation-
The Pro Body Jig as shown in figure is a single
tool comprising of two Pro Body Tools connected by a
metal stem and has adjustable seating for each of
the Pro Body Tools. This way, one can place the
block on the tool, adjust the location of each Pro
Body Tool with a hex key, lock the tools in place
and then cut each of the front and rear holes
without removing and re-adjusting the Pro Body
Tools. This allows for a more precise drilling of
the front and rear axle holes on the same body
line.
|
 |
Axle Hole
Drilling-
An added advantage of the Pro Body Tool is that it
drills the holes higher in the car body (5/32" from
bottom of car body) so the car body and the enclosed
weight will sit lower to the track. |
See detailed Instructions on using the
Pro Body Jig. |

(Note: The Pro
Hub Tool is required for use with the Pro Outer Hub
Shaver)
The Pro Outer Hub
Shaver will surely become one of the most popular tools
for the 2009/2010 pinewood derby season for the
following uses:
-
Ensures accurate rotation of the wheel by
squaring the outer wheel hub to the wheel bore
for proper mounting of the wheel on the Pro
Wheel Mandrel
-
Reduces friction between the axle head and the
outer wheel hub by eliminating flaws on the
outer wheel hub and, most importantly
-
Removes the step in the outer wheel hub on the
"new" BSA wheels which are a potential double friction
contact point with the axle head.
(Please note
that the Pro Outer Hub Shaver is intended for use on
BSA wheels only. It is not recommended for use
on wheels made by any other manufacturer.)

Pro Axle Guide
$9.95
|
Frustrated by axle
slots??? Take the guesswork out of working with
the standard BSA axle slots!!!
The Pro Axle
Guide is designed specifically to insert the axles into
the slots consistently in the same location so all 4
wheels will be positioned the same. This is
necessary for proper alignment and increased speeds.
The
Pro Axle Guide is designed specifically to insert the
axles into the slots consistently in the same location
with the proper wheel to body spacing.
-
Consistent Axle Insertion by ensuring that the
axles are mounted in the same manner on all 4
wheels
-
Establishes consistent wheel to body spacing by
establishing the proper gap between the wheel
hub and the car body.
-
Reduces damage to the block by maintaining
support of the block during the insertion
process.
